Covenant Discipleship Quarterly
background

Covenant Discipleship Connection - November 2009
The Wesleyan movement was essentially missional in character. The Wesleys understood that the church does not exist for itself, it exists for the world that God loves. People are drawn to it when it is like salt of the earth and light for the world.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - October 2009
Riding in a paceline is a lot like discipleship. The journey of discipleship is best taken with others.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - September 2009
“John Wesley was a campus minister.” I’ve seen a lot of creative t-shirts, tote bags, and other paraphernalia at United Methodist gatherings through the years. By far my favorite is the button with Wesley’s face on it and that phrase out beside.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - August 2009
John and Charles Wesley understood that redemption is inclusive of all creation. This means that God desires the healing of the body and the spirit. For John Wesley healing includes physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - July 2009
Acts of justice are the public extension of the acts of compassion. Giving a meal to a hungry person is an act of compassion. Working with others to address the causes of hunger in your community is an act of justice.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - June 2009
John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, had a remarkable ability to communicate the content of Christian faith and life. Perhaps more important for Wesley’s legacy was his development of a method that would help people practice their faith.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - May 2009
The legacy of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement, was his development of a method that would help people practice their faith. In Wesley’s lifetime, Methodists were simply people who consistently practiced this method.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - April 2009
Christ is alive! His life is the way of salvation, which is the way of healing, wholeness, compassion, and justice. This is why acts of justice are among the four ways disciples follow Jesus’ teachings included in the General Rule of Discipleship. But acts of justice are always the most difficult for Covenant Discipleship groups to understand.
Covenant Discipleship Connection - March 2009
The 2008 General Conference added to the vows of church membership. All the vows are contained in the Baptismal Covenant found on pages 33-39 of The United Methodist Hymnal. The change I am writing about here is to a question found on page 38 under the heading “Reception into the Local Congregation:" As members of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness? Did you notice the change?
Covenant Discipleship Connection - February 2009
The Rev. Dr. Vicki Miller Brendler explains how the Covenant Discipleship model can help pastors and other religious professionals be grounded spiritually, to be accountable to one another, and work toward fulfilling the purpose for their life and ministry.

Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Fall 2008)
The Covenant Discipleship Quarterly is changing. After 23 years as a quarterly publication, in January 2009 it becomes a monthly e-mail newsletter. The Covenant Discipleship Quarterly becomes the Covenant Discipleship Connection.
Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Summer 2008)
A rule of life is a pattern of spiritual disciplines that provides structure and direction for growth in holiness.… A rule of life is not meant to be restrictive, although it certainly asks for genuine commitment. It is meant to help us establish a rhythm of daily living, a basic order within which new freedoms can grow. A rule of life, like a trellis, curbs our tendency to wander and supports our frail efforts to grow spiritually.
Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Spring 2008)
What shapes the life of your church? When congregations practice and encourage accountable discipleship, they place Christ at the center of their life and mission.
Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Winter 2008)
The United Methodist Way -- This is a passage John Wesley frequently cites in his journal. Given his life-long quest for holiness of heart and life it is no surprise that the would be drawn to this verse. As we begin a new year and move toward another General Conference Hebrews 12:14 is a valuable guide for The United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Way is the pursuit of peace with all people and, most important, holiness of heart and life.

Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Summer 2007)
Making disciples, like making musicians, does not happen by accident. It is done with intention born of love for God and love for those whom God calls into God's household in baptism.
Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Spring 2007)
When we accept Christ's invitation to follow him, he doesn't remove us from the world. He invites us to follow him in the world. And ... the world is big and dangerous place with many places and ways to get off course and lost. That's why Christ invites us to follow him alongside fellow disciples. When we follow together, in small groups that provide mutual accountability and support, we are more likely to reach our destination (holiness of heart and life).
Covenant Discipleship Quarterly (Winter 2007)
Charles Wesley, John's younger brother, will be 300 years old in 2007. He was the poet of the Methodist movement. Whenever the early Methodists gathered in their societies, classes, and bands, they sang Charles' hymns.

Back to Basics
(from Covenant Discipleship Quarterly: October 1985)
The task of discipleship calls for the binding together of those with like mind and purpose to watch over one another in love. . . . This is plain Christian common sense. It is also the essence of Methodism.
The Call to Commitment
(from Covenant Discipleship Quarterly: October 1985)
In our churches today, there are those who, like the early Methodists, have been called to discipleship. Their task, no less than their eighteenth century forebears, is to feed Christ's flock — within the church and beyond it. The call cannot be answered lightly, because it is a call to obedience that takes precedence over all other concerns and objectives.
