Covenant 6 from a Covenant Discipleship Group at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC

  Fall Semester 2004

We enter into this covenant in gratitude for God's grace in the Word, shown to us in many ways: the beauty of creation, the fellowship of community, and the gift of Jesus Christ. We recognize that we are stewards of our time and talents, which are gifts from God. We will use these gifts to be obedient and to search out God's purpose for our lives. We respect and accept fully all group members, whose integrity and confidentiality we will uphold in all that we share. With God's grace and mercy we make our covenant.

Acts of Compassion

  • Daily, I will seek to offer special compassion and encouragement to some one within my normal circle of contacts.
  • I will seek to offer compassion and encouragement to those whom I find challenging.
  • I will do something compassionate for myself each day.

Acts of Worship

  • I will strive to praise God in all situations.
  • I will take time each day to experience the awe of God's creation.
  • I will attend at least one worship service each week.

Acts of Devotion

  • I will spend time daily reading Scripture as a devotional exercise.
  • I will take time daily to pray in solitude, allotting a portion of that time to listen to God; and I will live each day in the knowledge that God's spirit is within me and available to me.
  • I will include in my prayers the members of my covenant discipleship group and all of God's children, including my enemies.

Acts of Justice

  • I will spend time each week, learning about the events in my community.
  • Whenever I see injustice, I will speak out against it; and whenever possible, strive to rectify it.
  • I will attempt to educate myself on socially just businesses and support them.

Spiritual Promptings and Warnings

  • I will respond to the spirit's prompting as to when my words are needed and when my words should remain unspoken.

We hereby make our commitment, trusting in the grace of God to give us the will and the strength to keep this covenant.
