Covenant 1 from a Covenant Discipleship Group at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, DC

  Fall Semester 2004
Christ's Disciples Group A

Covenant Preamble

I love you, 0 LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
My God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised. (Ps. J8:l-3a)

In gratitude for the grace of Jesus Christ, in whose death and resurrection we have found new life, we pledge to be his disciples. We recognize that our time and talents are giftsfrom God, and we will use them to search out God's will for us and to obey. We will do our best not to compromise the will of God for human goals. We will serve both God and God's creation earnestly and lovingly. We will respect and accept fully all group members, whose integrity and confidentiality we will uphold in all that we share.

Furthermore, we exist for the purpose of support, communal prayer, receiving the Word, and watching over one another in love so that all are encouraged to work out their salvation and for those of us who profess the Christian faith, we will support one another in offering Christ our Redeemer to others.

Acts of Compassion

  1. We will affirm the God-given gifts of others by expressing genuine appreciation to at least one person each day.
  2. We will grow (endeavor) to balance the time we devote to school, church, work, family and friends, including our own spiritual and recreational life.

Acts of Justice

  1. When we are aware of injustices practiced in our church, our community, our nation, and the world, we will speak out.
  2. We will practice responsible stewardship of the world's resources in the context of our personal lives and communal commitments.

Acts of Devotion

  1. We will practice daily devotions, including the reading of Scripture and prayer. We will pray regularly for all the members of our covenant discipleship group.
  2. We will approach our exams and academic papers as acts of worship.

Acts of Worship

  1. 1. We will pray for those who lead us in worship each week — and especially for the minister.
  2. We will be faithful in attendance and participation in worship each Sunday.
